RELAXER UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2016

Image
So, I relaxed my hair earlier this month… I relaxed my hair on November 2nd at 11 weeks post with ORS Olive Oil Built-In Protection New Growth No Lye Relaxer in normal strength . For some of us who haven’t use that relaxer box before, it contains the relaxer base, liquid activator, shampoo, deep conditioner, gloves, mixing stick and instruction sheet. As usual, I parted my hair in 4 sections and parted each of these sections in 5-6 smaller sections. I mixed the liquid activator into the relaxer base for a minute and let it sit as recommended while I based my ears, scalp and hairline with Vaseline . I applied some Vaseline on my already processed hair too. Then I proceeded to apply the relaxer. It took me 20 minutes to apply the relaxer and smooth my hair. I then let the water run through my hair for 5 minutes or so to rinse the relaxer out, shampooed 4 times and deep conditioned for 45 minutes. I rinsed my hair, applied my leave-ins and set my hair on rollers ...

DEEP CONDITIONING TRICK FOR SOFTER, SHINIER HAIR

Image
I’ve always read about mixing your favorite deep conditioner with oil - or with other deep conditioners - to maximize the experience of deep conditioning. I really didn’t see the point… however, when I tried a similar technique for myself, I promised myself that it would become part of my routine, because I was excited about it and loved the results. The products I used for that particular deep conditioning session was the ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Pak and the ORS HaiRepair VitalOils . The most common oil used for this method is usually  jojoba oil because it’s similar to the natural oil produced by our scalp (sebum). After I’ve done my hot oil treatment with my oil mix and cleansed my hair, I squeezed out the excess water out of my hair. I applied a quarter size of the oil to my wet hair; I applied another quarter size of oil just to make sure that the oil covered all of my strands. Then I applied the deep conditioner and wrapped my hair with two plastic bags....

HEALTH RELATED PRACTICES FOR A HEALTHY HAIR JOURNEY

There is more to a healthy hair journey than what we do on our wash days, the hair products we use (DIYs, organic and such) or how long we are able to stretch our relaxers. Here are a few healthy practices - related to hair or our overall health – that I adopted for the past couple of years that can contribute to a healthy hair journey: Clean eating: Eating home cooked meals has become a huge deal to me,  because of sanitary reasons and it's budget friendly. Fresh vegetables and fish, turkey, duck, grains and fruits are part of my diet. I indulge in ice cream and cake and such once in a while. I don’t drink sodas, mainly water. I drink juice once or twice a week. Drink a lot of water: I don't drink 8 glasses of water a day, but I drink enough water to keep me hydrated. If you find water to be too bland, especially in warm weather, you can add your own taste to the water by adding some lemon juice and honey, or some baking soda or use this item if you fancy a sparkli...

HAIR JOURNEY UPDATE - 2 YEARS (and 4 months)

Image
So… when I started my hair journey in 2014, I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I was excited! I had one goal in mind: that my hair would grow back passed my shoulders again. Did I reach my goal? I didn't think to take a picture of the back at the time - it was definitely shorter than the front - but here is what the front looked like: I had just come back from the hair salon - May 9, 2014 June 15, 2015; barely neck length June 15, 2015; barely neck length I do have pictures of the back for this date (June 15, 2015) but there were spots on the mirror so I won't post it on here. August 31, 2016 I'VE REACHED MY GOAL!!! I thought it would have taken me 3 – 4 years to accomplish my goal, taking into account that I wasn’t knowledgeable about hair care and the setbacks that would result from that.  But thankfully, I still have all of my hair! And I did have setbacks mostly from relaxer touch-ups. My hair is not damaged; some area...

HAIR CARE ROUTINE - 2016

It's been a while since I've posted about my hair care routine. So here is what I’ve been doing to my hair since the last time I talked about it: Trim : when needed, which would be anything between 6 to 9 months. Relaxer : between 10 to 16 weeks. I used to use the ORS Olive Oil Relaxer in normal, but I’ve switched back to Gentle Treatment relaxer in super . Clarify : I clarify with ORS Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo : o    Every four weeks o    One week before and after a relaxer application      Protein Treatment : o    Every four weeks with Garnier Fructis DamageEraser Strength Reconstructing Butter o    One week before and after a relaxer application with ORS Olive Oil Hair Masque      Wash : I wash my hair weekly and it involves the following steps: o    Hot oil treatment with my oil mix for 2 hours o    Cleanse with Tresemme Naturals NourishingMoisture Shampoo o ...

MY EXPERIENCE WITH CURLFORMERS

Image
I LOVE roller sets! I loved roller sets even before I started my hair journey two years ago. It was the best way to get the silky look without reaching for the blow dryer or flat iron. After my hair got to a certain length last year, I started to use magnetic rollers again, and I was excited to be able to set my hair on rollers again. I love roller sets because it is also a way to track my hair progress without doing a formal length check with a t-shirt (impossible to do with a pixie cut) or with a measuring tape (I always have trouble seeing the numbers right). And setting my hair on rollers has always been a great way to stretch my new growth to make my hair more manageable. After some progress in my hair length, I noticed my hair would not be completely dry after I took the magnetic rollers down. Since I've had some curlformers on hand, I decided to try them earlier this year to see how my hair would turn out. The curlformers I bought are not the "official" cur...

HOW I DO MY HOT OIL TREATMENT

Hot oil treatments have been an integral part of my hair care routine since late 2014. I do them weekly right before I wash my hair, but it can also be done once a month. A hot oil treatment session can last from 1 to 2 hours depending on the moisture level my hair needs. I wear two plastic bags over my hair and make sure that I’m not going anywhere or expecting any visitors that day J I don’t mix a lot of oils for my oil treatments. My oil mixture usually consists of the following:                 1 part organic coconut oil                 1 part extra virgin olive oil                 1/3 or ½ part of castor oil                 Few drops of Vitamin E oil    ...

MY EXPERIENCE: RENPURE SOLUTIONS ROSEMARY MINT CLEANSING CONDITIONER

Image
When I thought there was no affordable cleansing conditioners in my area, I stumbled upon this cleansing conditioner: Renpure Solutions Rosemary Mint Cleansing Conditioner . I liked the ingredients they listed: the rosemary, the seaweeds, the mint, the coconut oil... I purchased it and used it up during the past few of months. It definitely cleansed my hair better than the Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner after each oil treatment, but I used more than the 10 - 12 pumps they recommend (I use 20), just to make sure there's no trace of oil left on my thick hair. I liked the way the mint refreshed my scalp, but I just wish the consistency was thicker because I found it too runny. Maybe I would've been able to use the recommended amount of pumps if it was thicker. And although it cleansed my hair, it always leaves my hair on the dryer side than moisturized. And with the cold weather coming, I can't afford dry hair. It's a good product, overall... and...

MY EXPERIENCE: AUSSIE MOIST 3 MINUTE MIRACLE DEEP CONDITIONER

Image
I must have been living under a rock for not discovering this product years ago! I should say this is one of the best deep conditioners I have used so far on my new growth... on my hair overall! I picked this up a few weeks ago... My ORS Replenishing Conditioner is almost at $9.00 in my local Walmart. I've read good reviews about the Aussie Moist deep conditioner . It was $3.46 at the time I purchased it so I decided to get it. Oh. My. Goodness! Now I know what I've been missing! After 6 weeks post relaxer, my hair becomes less and less cooperative. The ORS Replenishing Conditioner is not that effective on my new growth and my hair loses its luster. But with the Aussie Moist deep conditioner , my hair becomes butter on contact, it literally takes less than a minute for my hair to become extremely soft and detangling becomes a breeze! Needless to say I have less shedding. My hair becomes shiny again and the deep conditioner's wonderful smell lasts for a whole week, ...

MY EXPERIENCE: TRESEMME NATURALS NOURISHING MOISTURE SHAMPOO

Image
For the past few months, I’ve been trying out new products, thinking outside the box. Two phrases I can’t seem to stop saying are “oh my gosh!” and “I’ve been missing out!” I’ve used both phrases this past Saturday night after cleansing my hair with the Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Shampoo! The notions of cleansing conditioners, sulfate-free shampoos, 2-in-1 shampoos were getting too confusing for me. At the end of the day, I just needed a product that would moisturize my dry hair, especially with the winter coming. I had a few of Shoppers Drugmart points so I decided to buy the aforementioned shampoo with them, so I wouldn’t feel guilty about buying yet another hair product :) I was also able to buy the Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser Heal and Seal Treatment – I haven’t looked up any reviews on this one, but I may write one after I try it out. Anyway, I didn’t have any high expectations about this shampoo. For most products never live up to the hype, so I didn’t want ...

RELAXER UPDATE (short post)

I relaxed my hair on February 22nd (more than 3 weeks ago). It was my longest relaxer stretch since I started taking care of my own hair... 16 weeks in total. I used the ORS Olive Oil Built-In Protection New Growth No-Lye Hair Relaxer system in normal ... Let's just say I'll use the extra strength with a bit of oil in it next time to avoid over-processing because my hair didn't take at all. I was contemplating to stretch again but I may have to relax my hair sooner to avoid unnecessary shedding and/or breakage. I will also be able to give a better review of the new growth relaxer system by ORS since it was my first time using it but it left my hair dry. It's the first time a relaxer has left my hair dry. But I should mention that I like the fact that I am not embarrassed with leftover products that I didn't completely use up during the relaxer application process. So that's it for now. It seems my relaxer problems arise when I started stretching my relaxers. ...

MY EXPERIENCE: CREME OF NATURE ARGAN OIL OIL TREATMENT

Image
This oil was given to me as a gift. Talking about excitement! I've always wanted to try a Creme of Nature product, but being the practical person that I am, I like to use up my products before investing in new ones.      I love the little bottle. I find it cute and it doesn't take much space. I also love the smell and based on its thick consistency I know I'm going to be using this oil for a while because a little goes a long way. Another reason why I love this oil is because it's the perfect combination with my leave-in conditioning cream when I moisturize and seal my hair. My leave-in conditioning cream leaves my hair shiny, sleek and moisturized, the oil leaves my hair even sleeker and my fingers just glide through my hair. No need to use heat on my hair to get a sleek look because the oil does it for me. I had seen a couple of Youtube videos of ladies saying they don't need to use heat with this oil... they were right! Another pro of this product is...

MY EXPERIENCE: GARNIER FRUCTIS SLEEK & SHINE INTENSELY SMOOTH LEAVE-IN CONDITIONING CREAM

Image
Another product that gave me an "ahhhhhhh" moment was this one: Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Intensely Smooth Leave-In Conditioning Cream ! Oh... my... gosh! Aside from the ORS Olive Oil Incredibly Rich Moisturizing Hair Lotion , I've never used any other hair lotion when I'm moisturizing and sealing my hair. At some point, I wanted to get rid of it because it was already oily, then sealing my hair with oil again was like a pleonasm to my hair: oil upon oil. And the oil would sip through my scarf and unto my pillow case... not a pleasant experience. Products for ethnic hair are not as popular here as they are in the States. And if you ever find one, it's generally on the pricey side. I honestly discovered this conditioning creamy by accident. They were at the bottom shelf and there weren't a lot of them. It cost me only $2.92 at WalMart at the time of purchase. It's not oily, it's thick in consistency but a tiny bit looser than the ORS hair l...

MY EXPERIENCE: GARNIER FRUCTIS DAMAGER ERASER STRENGTH RECONSTRUCTING BUTTER

Image
If I said I wasn't impressed with those commercials advertising the Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser line, that would be a lie. To this day, I'm resisting the need to buy both shampoo and conditioner because I don't need them right now, meaning that I can invest in something else that I need. Thus the reason why I picked up this butter. As I was reading the instructions and ingredients' list, it sounded to me the purpose of this "butter" was to deep condition, although it says to leave it on for only 5 minutes. I went home and deep conditioned the first time with it without heat for 2 hours (I was doing chores and lost track of time) The layers (2 plastic bags and a towel) must have moved or I left the product on for too long because my hair was hard when I rinsed it out. I left it under the sink to give it another try the following month. The second time, I deep conditioned with it with my soft hooded bonnet attachment for the recommended 5 minutes... When ...

MY EXPERIENCE: SOFT BONNET ATTACHMENT

Image
I purchased this soft bonnet attachment from a Chinese store on Amazon.ca, for less than $5.00, no tax or shipping. I wanted to know how effective a soft bonnet attachment can be comparing to a hard hooded dryer. I've had a hard hooded dryer before, but I'm not ready to invest in a new one at the moment. And I really liked the convenience of having a hooded dryer that won't take much space, something that I can take with me if I ever travel. The convenience of buying anything from the online Chinese stores is the price and the fact that the shipping is always free or very minimal. The con to that is the shipping always takes a long time. Before purchasing it, I've read mixed reviews about it and at some point was a bit hesitant. But I didn't have much to lose so I ordered it. After several weeks it finally arrived. And I've been using it ever since. I currently set my hair on rollers every wash day, and air drying my hair wasn't giving me the resul...

TRESEMME NATURALS NOURISHING MOISTURE CONDITIONER: PRE-SHAMPOO TREATMENT (OR PREPOO)

In my last post, I recounted my relaxer disaster. The more I think about it, little details of that day are coming up. The strength of the relaxer may not have been the problem. The processing time (around 30 minutes) may not have been the problem either. I have done both of these things when I first started to relax my own hair and I've never had any problems until last November. The problem was the water pressure in my movable shower head! It was too weak to wash the relaxer off as quickly as I would want it to. If there is no pressure to wash the relaxer out of the hair as soon as possible, of course the hair is going to be over-processed. It only occurred to me the other day... Now I have to take care of that shower head... So, with that being said, I decided to stretch my relaxer a bit longer than 12 weeks, just to avoid overlapping it. I thought I would re-visit something that I haven't done in a long time - just because I didn't like the result at the time - to h...

DRAMA OF SELF-RELAXING

Oh well! A lot of things have happened in the past few weeks that seemed surreal. But my hair seems to have survived it all! I'm still mastering self-relaxing... the very reason why I had to cut all of my hair because I didn't know how to self-relax, nor how to care for my new growth, which resulted in the matted mess that inspired this hair journey... but it seems when I get the hang of something, I go ahead and mess it all up! Since I started my hair journey back in June/July 2014, I've been relaxing with the normal strength of the ORS relaxer. My hair can easily stand the extra strength relaxer but I fear to over-process it... but in the meantime, my hair was getting so thick I didn't know what to do with it. So, last November, I bought the extra strength of the ORS relaxer and self-relaxed... As I am still learning to relax my own hair, the 20-minute window to apply and smooth the hair is never enough for me; I need an additional 10 mns to apply and smooth the h...
