HOW I DO MY HOT OIL TREATMENT
Hot oil treatments have been an integral part of my hair
care routine since late 2014. I do them weekly right before I wash my hair, but
it can also be done once a month. A hot oil treatment session can last from 1
to 2 hours depending on the moisture level my hair needs. I wear two plastic
bags over my hair and make sure that I’m not going anywhere or expecting any
visitors that day J
I don’t mix a lot of oils for my oil treatments. My oil
mixture usually consists of the following:
1 part
organic coconut oil
1 part
extra virgin olive oil
1/3 or
½ part of castor oil
Few
drops of Vitamin E oil
Few
drops tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil
At the moment, I’m not particular about the oil brands that
I’m using, as long as they are single-ingredient products and organic. The only
brand of oil that has been consistent for my oil mixture has been my castor oil
from Now Solutions ,
because I don’t use a lot of castor oil and the bottle is 16 oz. So I’ve had it
for a while now.
I always put the mixture in an applicator bottle and I may
or may not warm up the bottle before applying the oil on my scalp and hair. I
also dampen my hair with warm water before coating my hair with the oil
mixture.
There are several mixture recipes online for hot oil
treatments but it’s best to make a combination that your scalp and hair like.
For example, some ladies can’t tolerate coconut oil on their scalp, so oil
mixtures should address your scalp and hair’s needs.
I personally use coconut oil as a carrier/base for the other
components. Olive oil moisturizes my hair and makes it less frizzy. Castor oil
moisturizes my new growth and promotes hair thickness and growth. Tea tree oil keeps
my scalp from itching. Vitamin E is found in most hair products on the market
because it’s known to stimulate hair growth, but too much of Vitamin E oil can
irritate the scalp (from experience).
Favorite commercial oil treatments can also be used for a
hot oil treatment, but I would recommend products with natural and organic
ingredients only to get the most out of them.
Should you decide to include hot oil treatment in your hair
routine, I hope it gives you the benefits your hair needs. Happy hair journey!
