TRESEMME NATURALS NOURISHING MOISTURE CONDITIONER: PRE-SHAMPOO TREATMENT (OR PREPOO)

In my last post, I recounted my relaxer disaster. The more I think about it, little details of that day are coming up.

The strength of the relaxer may not have been the problem. The processing time (around 30 minutes) may not have been the problem either. I have done both of these things when I first started to relax my own hair and I've never had any problems until last November. The problem was the water pressure in my movable shower head! It was too weak to wash the relaxer off as quickly as I would want it to. If there is no pressure to wash the relaxer out of the hair as soon as possible, of course the hair is going to be over-processed. It only occurred to me the other day... Now I have to take care of that shower head...

So, with that being said, I decided to stretch my relaxer a bit longer than 12 weeks, just to avoid overlapping it. I thought I would re-visit something that I haven't done in a long time - just because I didn't like the result at the time - to help me with this stretch with minimal shedding, breakage and tangles. Usually I would apply my oil mix (coconut, olive, castor and vitamin E oils) to my scalp and damp hair and deep condition for up to 2 hours... This step helps in detangling my hair prior to washing it, especially if I have lots of new growth. But my scalp would start to smell after a day or two, due to the fact that my scalp had too much oil on it (yup! there is such a thing as too much oil on your scalp): after oiling my scalp 2-3 times throughout the week for scalp massages, and leaving it on again for 2 hours (or more) before I wash my hair was excessive to my scalp.

I decided to mix the oil mix with my conditioner and left it on my hair for 2 hours. I didn't add any of this mix to my scalp, just my new growth and the length of my hair. I must say detangling was a breeze, way better than my oil mix alone. I'm thinking it must be the glycerin and aloe vera in my conditioner. I have been doing this for the last 2 weekends and that's a step I will definitely incorporate more regularly in my wash routine. And it will also help me stretch my relaxer for longer than 12 weeks.

Learning what works and what doesn't work for my hair is so much fu and exciting! I've found yet another purpose for my favorite conditioner: pre-shampoo treatment, or prepoo for short. It amazes me how simple and inexpensive some solutions can be when dealing with hair...

I'm very glad of this hair journey. Hope your hair journey is as enjoyable as mine :)
