CLEANSING WITH REGULAR CONDITIONER

Image
Another saying that bothered me whenever I read/heard it was “washing your hair with conditioner only is like showering with lotion”. I sincerely thought some people out there were really against people feeling empowered about caring for their own hair. How could this be if the conditioners have cleansing properties? In my own personal comparison, Tresemme Naturals conditioner I’m using has similar, if not the same components as the Wen cleansing conditioners. I took the “cleansing with regular conditioner is like showering with lotion” saying with a grain of salt, and started cleansing with the Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture conditioner. I regularly cleanse my hair once a week so I’d cleanse with it alone: no coffee/tea/apple cider vinegar rinse afterwards… just the conditioner. I raved about how soft my hair felt after each use. At the same time, one of my other products stopped working as they used to: my staple product, ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner, wasn’t wor...

TRIMMING/CUTTING THIN ENDS

Image
“Health over length” is something I hear a lot in the online hair community: don’t overuse heat, don’t use heat on dirty hair, don’t do this, don’t do that... Then they would conclude or hashtag “health over length” or “with health comes length”. This term is repeated so much, it becomes somewhat overused on social media, hair blogs/vlogs, I often wonder if it holds any truth to it at all Well, this “saying” was put to the test when my shedding became uncontrollable. I was doing everything right (or so I thought): weekly I’d do hot oil treatment for 1 hour, cleanse, deep condition, dry my hair with a towel, apply a leave-in conditioner, oil and hair lotion and let air dry. No blow drying or flat ironing no matter how un-stretched my hair looked… I’d do a flat twist out, or tie my hair down when it’s about 50% dry for a somewhat sleek look (my hair wasn’t long enough for roller sets yet)... moisturizing and sealing and scalp massages during the week... but my hair kept shedding. So...

Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner as a leave-in conditioner

Right of the bat I will say that I like my Tresemme Naturals conditioner better as a co-wash than a leave-in conditioner. Before I started co-washing with my beloved conditioner, I had considered using it as a leave-in just so I can always experience the softness in my hair. I actually experimented it in two different ways: I used it as is right out of the bottle but in very small amount, and I used it by making it more watery, adding water and oils to it. Using it right out of the bottle wasn't doing it for me. I didn't like the way it felt on my hair and was afraid it might cause buildups. So I decided to dilute it by adding water, and I added some oil to it so my hair can better benefit from this leave-in. Here is a list of things that is needed to create a leave-in conditioner using a regular conditioner: 1 part of favorite conditioner 1 part of penetrating oil 4 parts of water Pour everything in a spray bottle and shake well. Following this met...

Co-washing with Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner

Image
Before I started my research on how to cleanse my hair with a regular conditioner, I thought only ladies with natural hair could, that it wasn't something for relaxed girls like me. Since some natural texture needs more moisture to become manageable, it only made sense to me that ladies with natural hair would co-wash more often than relaxed ladies. Was I wrong! Some relaxed ladies need to co-wash as well, and the conditioner doesn't need to be marketed as a "cleansing conditioner" in order for it to cleanse your hair. Even before I started to relax my hair, my 4c hair was always dry, and my scalp covered with dandruff. It would become moisturized and manageable when it was time to wash it again :) which would be after two weeks or a month. When I started to relax my hair, that didn't change. So with my hair history, I decided to try cleansing my hair with a regular conditioner. In one of my previous posts, I talked about how I needed a purpose for my Tresemm...

Comparison pictures: June 2014 - June 2015

Image
This comparison picture was long overdue! After putting the pictures side by side, all mixed emotions were gone! I was and am still proud of my progress! Weekly hot oil treatments with organic and natural oils, and scalp massages definitely made my hair grow. Weekly deep conditioning sessions, moisturizing and sealing my hair kept my hair moisturized. Low manipulation hairstyles (flat twists out and braids out) gave my hair the environment it needed to grow. Maintaining a healthy diet was also key. So far, maintaining my hair is not as complicated as I thought it was going to be. Applying relaxer is still a challenge though, no matter how many YouTube videos I watch. I'm still nursing a setback from the back of my head and thankfully it's catching up with the rest of my hair. Although I cut my hair in May of last year, I do not have a presentable picture from May to make a decent comparison. That is the reason why I am showing a picture from June 2014. But there was little dif...

My one year hair journey

As I reminisce on my one year into this hair journey, I have mixed emotions. I didn't reach my goal length, which was shoulder length hair; I feel disappointed. But then again, "it's a journey", I told myself. I'm gonna have ups and downs and it's a learning experience. And boy, did I learn! I learned about what works for my hair and scalp and what doesn't, and of this I am very proud. I'm also proud as this is one of the things that I have been focused on that is bringing results. Even though my hair is not at shoulder length, but they're not as short as they were last year. They're almost there. They're not as dry either. Here are the things I found worked for my hair: 1. Hot oil treatment: I am not yet sure if the tea tree essential oil that I have been using since last December had anything to do with it, but when I warm up the oils (extra virgin olive oil, organic coconut oil, tea tree essential oil and most recently added castor oil...

My Journey with Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner

I had decided to give co-washing with a regular conditioner another try, because for some reason they do not sell any cleansing conditioner in my area (aside from the over-priced Wen), and the environment is too dry to be shampooing every week, even with a baby shampoo. So I decided to try Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner… and I may have found a replacement for my Wen cleansing conditioners! It all started a couple of weeks ago, when I was looking for a deep conditioner that would be cheaper than the ORS Replenishing Conditioner, and stumbled upon the Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner. I have read so many good reviews about it, but I was a little bit skeptical. So I asked one of my best friends if she had used this conditioner before. She basically sold me on it, describing how soft it made her hair feel. She was using it as a rinse-out conditioner. So I thought “if it made her hair so soft by using it only as a rinse-out conditioner, there should ...

Improving my hair routine: hot oil treatment and heatless curls

Lately, I have been trying to improve and simplify my hair routine. I have been experimenting with a few things to make wash day more enjoyable and stress-free and so far, here is what I have done (or planning to do in the near future): -          Hot oil treatment: Before, I would just put the olive and coconut oil mix on my scalp and hair. Now, I heat it up in my applicator bottle in hot water before application. To optimize my hot oil treatment experience, I added tea tree essential oil to my olive and coconut oil mix (both olive and coconut oil are organic, by the way). I started using the tea tree essential oil last December and I can now see the difference in the rate my hair is growing. The hot oil treatment also takes care of the dryness and helps in stretching my relaxer. So I don’t need to use a conditioner to prepoo on dry hair anymore. -          Co-wash: now that my Wen clean...
